Interview and Photography by Jill O’Meara

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your business?

I am a Permanent Makeup and tattoo artist. After 30 years in the beauty industry, including 27 years running my own salon, I realised that the long days were leaving little room for a balanced life. Determined to make a change, I spent four years training and working hard behind the scenes, pursuing a new career in permanent makeup. This journey reignited my passion for art and creativity, which led me to begin training as a fineline tattoo artist.

Closing my salon to open a home studio was the best decision I’ve ever made, as it has allowed me to build a fulfilling career while achieving a better work-life balance.

Can you share a defining moment or challenge that shaped your journey?

When I turned 50 last year, I had a light bulb moment, realising that I wasn’t getting any younger, and I was feeling overworked, bored and unchallenged in my job. I wanted to pursue something more financially rewarding while maintaining a healthier work-life balance. It was a huge challenge to make this shift at an older age, but I believe you’re never too old to learn new things, and I’m so proud I took this opportunity. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is not only giving people confidence in their appearance but also making them smile. Seeing the joy on my clients’ faces when they see their new brows or a meaningful tattoo I’ve designed for them is priceless. It’s a privilege to help clients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or alopecia, or those who have overcome trauma or the loss of a loved one. My job is incredibly fulfilling, and I’m honoured to be a part of their journey.

You have experienced a photoshoot with Jill, what was it like for you and do you see yourself different now?

It was such a wonderful experience, it’s something I’ve never done before. Its hard to be in front of a camera like that without feeling vulnerable but I have to say Jill made me feel really relaxed and comfortable.. and when I seen the photos I was so impressed and I’ve used them for every occasion I could. I feel they make me look professional which has helped me give a good first impression setting up my new business.

Do you have any favourite quotes or mantras that inspire you?

“TRUST THE NEXT CHAPTER BECAUSE YOU ARE THE AUTHOR”

What’s next for you and your business?

My plan is to continue growing my business, knowing that in this industry, we never stop learning and refining our skills. I’m committed to constantly challenging myself with new techniques and finding ways to enhance what I do.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your professional life

The biggest influence in my personal life is my husband of 26 years. He has always been my number one fan, offering unwavering support. He gave me the courage to push far beyond my comfort zone and take the lead in completely changing my career. He continues to encourage me every step of the way, and I know he always has my back 100%.

What motivates you to keep going during difficult times?

In difficult times, I find motivation by journaling as much as I can when I feel self-doubt or down on myself. The permanent makeup industry is highly competitive, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or lose confidence, especially with the pressure from social media. Journaling helps me stay grounded and refocus on my journey and growth.

When you’re not working, what are your favourite activities or hobbies?

I love spending time with my family and friends, and staying active by going to the gym. I’m always challenging myself, whether through training or learning new skills, to keep growing and improving

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a businesswoman?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned as a businesswoman is the importance of learning to switch off and create balance. I’ve realized that being financially stable doesn’t mean working 24/7, and it’s essential to enjoy the journey without constantly worrying about things beyond my control. Finding peace in the process has been key to my growth and happiness.
